Bellydance veils and Niqabs?
Hey if you dance, then I've got a question for you. Many bellydancers really hate the idea of wearing a face veil because of the idea of it giving a nod to the oppression of women back in the olden days, but during all of the veil dances that I've seenon youtube, why do most all of them draw a veil to their faces during the preformance? Does it mean anything? Thanks. (I know it's a dumb question, I'm just curious.)
Even very modest bellydance costuming such as that worn by Hilal dance does not involve veils - at least not that I have seen

I think most belly dance face veils, the bits of gauzy cloth, are pure Western harem fantasy. Most dancers think they are naff and would not be seen dead in one. See posts numerous threads including this one
"I think face veils are really silly and super-cliché.
It's something I can only accept in a comedy number but never on a serious dancer (Melaya dance is an exception, but those look very different).
It's this "harem girl" image that we really should try to avoid.
Plus, in the Middle East, a woman who covers her face would not expose her belly (or arms, legs, hair etc.) at the same time. So it's about as un-authentic as you can be.

There is a form of belly dance from Egypt called Meleya Leff that uses veils very coquettishly and I believe face veils are sometimes worn in addition to using a melaya (large black veil) "The melaya can be pulled tight, wrapped and unwrapped to display a female’s figure. Stage versions can be synthetic with sequins.The dancer often wears a tight, short dress and high heels. The melaya is wrapped around her body and she makes a great show of wrapping and unwrapping the melaya, while chewing and popping bubble gum."

It's very flirty with lots of pouting, air kissing and come hithering. I once had the great misfortune to attend a Meleya Leff workshop not realising the style of dance on offer, I absolutely hated it. I believe it does have folk dance roots when it was a "cheeky" dance.
